chaplaincy

Chaplains have been described as “spiritual paramedics” who meet people in the midst of crisis. Our Chaplains serve throughout Kensington, ministering door-to-door and on the streets. They offer prayer, practical help and support to those hurting in the inner-city. The Rock Chaplains go out multiple times a week to reach all the people in the Kensington area, including the residents, homeless, kids, store owners and those addicted living in the streets. They are also first responders in a crisis with a spiritual overtone, present at crime scenes and local disasters. Everyone in Kensington is in some kind of crisis. The Rock is affiliated with many resources and social services. The Chaplains are there to connect hurting people to those resources. They go out to offer help and hope, and share the love of Jesus.

***** The Ciry of Philadelphia has asked the Rock to assist with special project to improve the conditions of the Kensington neighborhood. This initiative will start with expanded outreach to the homeless and addicted on the streets here. For several months, the Rock will be dispatching Chaplains to the streets to (1) offer practical help in the form of social services and drug/alcohol treatment, (2) communicate information on behalf of the City to the street population, and (3) share the love of Jesus.

To meet the City’s request, we are rapidly expanding our Chaplaincy. Those over 18 years old with a love for the Lord and a desire to reach the lost are invited to apply. Please bear in mind that conditions on the streets expose our Chaplains to distressing sights and situations. They must be spiritually and emotionally prepared for service here.

A Chaplain Application is below. Any approved application will be followed by a required training session. Our next training session will be on Wednesday, February 28 at 5:30 PM. We will be scheduling training sessions on an ongoing basis after that. OUR FIRST OUTREACH DAY WILL BE SATURDAY, MARCH 2, FROM 9:00 am - 2: 00 pm. For those who can not make an earlier training session, training will be provided on that day.

We will soon develop a schedule for ongoing deployment. Chaplains will be able to sign up for shifts that work with their personal schedule. There is no minimum time requirement for Chaplains. For questions, please contact our Chaplain Coordinator Kevin Bernard at (215) 257-3051.
